Day 6 - 10 Days to a Healthier You in 2012

Day 6 - Kidney Support

Your kidneys are 2 hard working machines!  They are members of your organs of elimination and filter 200 quarts of blood every day.  Like your liver they do so much more than filtering your blood!  They are responsible for controlling the volume of fluids in your body, regulating your blood pressure, recycling minerals to keep your electrolytes balanced, communicating with your parathyroid glands to balance calcium (this protects your bones) and so much more!

Your kidneys are very susceptible to damage from the heavy metal mercury, high blood pressure, acetaminophen as well as excess protein and sodium.  Below you will find a list of foods that both cleanse and support the kidneys.
Asparagus acts as a mild natural diuretic which promotes the formation of urine to aid in both detoxification and cleansing of the kidneys.  It’s high fiber content also balances blood sugars and contains inulin, which naturally feeds friendly bacteria in the large intestine preventing yeast overgrowth.

Purple and Red Colored Fruits – especially blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, cranberries, cherries, red and purple grapes as well as watermelon.
These brightly colored fruits contain high levels of anthocyanidins – flavanoids with the highest levels of antioxidants to reduce inflammation, reverse oxidation and provide protection to blood vessels.

Cranberries also protect the urinary tract by making the walls of the bladder too slippery for bacteria to attach.

Dark Colored Beans – their high fiber, mineral and vitamin content help to prevent kidney stone formation, balance blood sugars, reduce LDL and inflammation.

Parsley is a powerful blood purifier that helps to remove waste and toxins from the kidneys.  It’s also a mild diuretic and helps to prevent kidney stones.

Cilantro and Chlorella are effective chelators of heavy metals and can help to protect your kidneys from the devastation of mercury.

Agar Agar is a blend of eight varieties of seaweed, which assist all organs of elimination to detoxify.  Additionally they help to balance blood sugars and to balance weight.

Chia and Flax Seeds both have unique combinations of soluble and insoluble fibers which combine to slow down your body’s conversion of starches into sugars.

Charcoal and Green Clay are both considered great detoxifying agents for both the liver and the kidneys.

Corn Silk, Gravel Root, Solidago, Barberry and Uva Ursi are well known herbal supports for the kidneys.  They can be made into tea or taken in capsules.

The ingredients in today’s smoothie are a departure from what we normally put in our smoothies, but the combo actually tastes good and is an amazing and powerful kidney detoxifier.
