There is something almost indescribable about the paring of strawberries and aged balsamic vinegar . . . the flavors simply enhance one another and become a heavenly combination.
It’s no secret that chocolate and strawberries are also an incredible combination. Chocolate has a way of bringing out both the sweetness and the tart flavors of fresh strawberries. And the sweet and tart flavors of the strawberries bring out some of the roasted nuances of dark chocolate.
So imagine how delicious a simple dessert can be when plump, fresh strawberries are drizzled with a thick concoction of balsamic vinegar that’s been aged until it’s thick and almost syrupy and deep, dark chocolate . . .
The result is nothing short of an OMG! moment!
OMG! Strawberries and Chocolate Balsamic Vinegar
From the moment fragrant, organic, shiny red strawberries hit the market I cannot stop thinking about them. I love them at room temperature so that every nuance of their sunkissed flavor can be enjoyed. A bowl of strawberries is an excellent dessert, but to dress up these beauties and transform them into an indescribable taste sensation all you have to do is drizzle them with silky-smooth, decadent and seductive Chocolate Balsamic Vinegar . . . This is a dessert no one can stop talking about until you make it the next time.
Yield – 2 servings
1 pint ripe organic strawberries
1 tablespoon Chocolate Balsamic Vinegar*
Rinse strawberries and drain on a kitchen towel until dry. Set aside 2 beautiful berries with stem still attached. Hull and slice remaining berries into thick slices. Layer in a small bowl and lightly drizzle each layer with chocolate balsamic vinegar.
Serve and watch the reactions of everyone trying this combination for the first time!
*If you don’t happen to have any on hand, you can find my recipe for Chocolate Balsamic Vinegar in my cookbook OMG! That’s Allergy Free. So if you don’t have your own copy you can take advantage of my Spring Sale and snap up a copy at only $29.95!
This elegantly simple, Real Food, dessert is also packed with antioxidants from the berries, the chocolate and the vinegar. Remember that balsamic vinegar is made from red wine so it contains all of the healthful properties of wine with enzymes that are a natural bi-product of fermentation and aging.
Both strawberries and chocolate have been documented (in many clinical trial studies) to improve cardiovascular health, reduce LDL cholesterol levels, normalize blood pressure, stabilize blood sugar levels, improve cognitive functions, reduce inflammation in Crohn’s disease, inflammatory bowel disease, macular degeneration and rheumatoid arthritis.
So the next time you want to serve an elegant and unusual dessert that will have everyone raving, try this one. It’s so delicious that no one will even think about how nutrient dense this dessert is!
