Can a Cup of Tea Save the World?

Recently I came across some information that made me ask this question . . .

Can A Cup of Tea Save the World?

As one of my blog followers, you know how passionate I am about simple, natural, Real Food solutions for all kinds of health issues.  So when I came across some new information on an herb that’s been used for more than 5,000 years my curiosity was more than just a little piqued!

In Traditional Chinese Medicine licorice root is the most prescribed herb next to ginseng and this is why . . . Licorice is so versatile that it’s been used by traditional practitioners around the world to treat:

  • Gastric Ulcers
  • Upper Respiratory Issues including bronchitis, excess mucous and coughing
  • Skin Psoriasis, Scaly Patches and Eczema
  • Food Borne Pathogens including Salmonella
  • STD’s including Herpes and HIV
  • Cold Sores, Canker Sores
  • Low Blood Pressure
  • Liver Issues including Fatty Liver Disease, Excess LDL Cholesterol and Congestion

So when I found a post from GreenMedicineInfo.com that contained over a dozen clinical trial studies using licorice I was really excited to find that it also treats SARS!

Licorice root contains a substance called glycyrrhizin which is 50 times sweeter than sucrose and is also the active ingredient in the root that is effective in treating viruses.  Initial studies in 1997 demonstrated that glycyrrhizin actually stimulated the growth of T-cells which are produced by the spleen.  These are sometimes called “killer cells” and are very effective at destroying viruses, with the side benefit of increasing the overall effectiveness of the immune system.

In a more recent study specifically directed at SARS, glycyrrhizin was compared with anti-viral pharmaceutical drugs and it was found to be the most effective at inhibiting the ability of the SARS virus from replicating its self . . . and if it cannot replicate its self it’s stopped!

This is such fantastic news!  I simply love it when current scientific studies support what our herbalist ancestors already discovered . . .

Last week while I was passing through Arizona I heard a news report that the flu season had hit California and Arizona late this year and that the cases of serious Upper Respiratory Infections and Influenza were at the highest levels in more than 2 years.  So to keep yourself and your family safe make yourself a cup of licorice tea!

You can purchase ground licorice root in the bulk department of your favorite natural foods market so that you can control the amount to create daily doses (100 mg) or therapeutic doses (600 mg).  Remember licorice is very sweet, in fact it's used as a sweetener in Japan, so be sure to start with less of the ground root and add more to meet your own taste.

Licorice can also be found in blends in tea bags by companies like Yogi Tea, Buddah Teas, Traditional Medicinals and more.  It can also be purchased as a tinctured preparation.  My favorite company for tinctured licorice is Herb Pharm.

For a refreshing frozen treat turn your tea into a healthful granita!

Licorice Granita
Because licorice is so sweet, there's no need for extra sweeteners in this delicious and refreshing granita.
Yield - 1 quart

2 tablespoons ground licorice root
1 quart pH 9.5 ionized water

Place licorice root in a non-reactive sauce pot, cover with cold water and soak 10 minutes.  Over low heat bring to a low simmer for 10 minutes.  Cool to room temperature, strain and pour into a freezer safe 8 x 8 inch glass baking dish.  Freeze until ice crystals begin to form.  Pull a fork through the crystals to separate them.  Repeat every 30 minutes until completely frozen.  Serve in a pretty glass or bowl for a refreshing, health restoring dessert!

Below you will find a chart I found on GreenMedicineInfo.com that outlines the wide array of trial studies that have been performed using licorice!
