You've all said things like, "It was my gut instinct," or "It was so gut wrenching," or "Listen to your gut." This line of thinking actually has some scientific backing. In fact scientists believe that our "second brain" is in our gut! It's actually called our Enteric Nervous System.
When your intestinal tract becomes irritated, inflamed or dehydrated it can really wreck havoc with your ability to digest your food, absorb nutrients and feel calm! So taking a little effort to keep this part of your digestive system healthy is a great way to look younger, feel better and keep yourself from "sweating the small stuff."
So in the spirit of all that goes with renewal of the mind, the body and the spirit as a vital part of your internal spring cleaning, here's a healing tonic for your "second brain."
Raw & Vegan Recipes: Healing Gut Tonic with Green Option
Raw & Vegan Recipes: Healing Gut Tonic
This raw, vegan and gluten-free “healing” smoothie is a great way to start the day. Papaya is known worldwide as a gut healer. The enzyme papain aids in digestion and helps cleanse the system. Pineapple contains the enzyme bromelain, which is naturally anti-inflammatory and helps “calm down” the small intestine. It is also an appetite suppressant. Blend in almond milk for healthy fats and a little protein, and a touch of fresh ginger for vitality for a true tropical “smoothie”. To add a little green nutritional magic- throw in a handful or two of organic spinach.
1 cup fresh pineapple, cut into chunks
1 cup fresh papaya, cut into chunks
1 cup almond milk, unsweetened
1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
1-2 handfuls organic spinach leaves (optional)
ice as needed to thicken
1. Pour milk into blender and add remaining ingredients. Puree to smooth.
2. Serve and enjoy. For an even more healing tonic, feel free to substitute dandelion leaves for the spinach leaves.
Hope you love it as much as Allison and I do!
