10 Super Foods For Women's Health (Men They're Good For You Too)

Since there are only about 2 weeks left on our 100 Days of Fun with Real Food journey, I want to give you some super healthy ideas that can assist you in achieving your optimal health.

I love preventative medicine, it's the very basis of naturopathic and biological medicine.  As a doctor of natural medicine, I believe just that, that there is generally a natural solution to improve your health, revitalize your health, boost your immune system and prevent illness and disease.

I know that there is a lot of info to sort, plug into your life and remember.  So any time there is a handy list that you can post on your pantry door, keep in your wallet, or save in a file on your computer is always helpful.

So when I came across this article by Dr. Policano, I thought you may appreciate it as well.  Just so you know, while her article is aimed at women, these super foods are great for men's health as well!

It's my hope that it will be a great reminder why you purchased these super foods.  In my cookbook - OMG! That's Allergy Free? - I have recipes that feature many of them.  So if you don't currently have a copy, be sure to take advantage of the discount still available on, where you will find a few slightly damaged copies available at a really deep discount.  (Click here.)

I'd also love to hear how you are using these wonderful super foods!  The comment section is now easier to use and I welcome things I can share with everyone who visits this blog!

Many thanks to my colleague, Dr. Policano for this article!

  1. I tried Wiki but it didn't really help me as far as how to find and use Maca.
"Lepidium meyenii, known commonly as maca, is an herbaceous biennial plant or annual plant (some sources[which?] say a perennial plant) native to the high Andes of Peru and Bolivia. It's also found in some parts of Brazil. It is grown for its fleshy hypocotyl (actually a fused hypocotyl and taproot), which is used as a root vegetable and a medicinal herb. Its Spanish and Quechua names include maca-maca, maino, ayak chichira, and ayak willku."
So, Dr. P how do you use Maca and where and in what form do you find it here in the US?
PS I LOVE your new easy comment format!

  2. Di, here's some good info on maca . . . Randomized clinical trials have shown that maca has favorable effects on energy and mood, may decrease anxiety and improve sexual desire. It lowers BP = helps with hypertension, balances central nervous system, increases energy, improves memory, and effectively treats prostate and ED issues as well as low sperm counts. Evidence from experimental studies indicates effects of maca on nutrition, fertility, memory, and mood. Black maca has better effects on sperm production than yellow maca which has only moderate effects. Red maca, however, has no effect on sperm production. However, red maca has been shown to reduce prostate size in rats.

You can find it as a loose powder or in capsules. I recommend the powder. According to Sunfoods their "organic, raw maca powder has a unique nutty flavor that can go with sweet or savory dishes. It's a perfect thickener for soups but also goes great with smoothies. It goes especially well with cacao."

Some people make it into a green tea by steeping the powder in a natural, reusable tea bag.

Experts recommend taking between 500 and 2000 mg per day in 3 divided doses. However, I always like to start on the low end, like 100-150 mg 1 time a day for a week or 2 and then start SLOWLY working up to 500 mg/day.

On line you can find it from Sunfoods and Swanson Health Products.

One of the problems with these nice, concise lists is that they sometimes lack enough info - they are more useful as a reminder.

    Hope that helps!

    1. Yes, it does. Thank you very much. Have you tried it? Would it be considered a natural food rather than a supplement? I have been trying to do food rather than supplements but some foods seem like supplements and vice versa. Maybe there's a post idea...

  3. I have tried it in tea form and it did give me an energy boost.

I consider it a functional food because it actually does more than its individual components would suggest.

Like you Di, I'm not really big on supplements. My personal opinion is that they are often too concentrated. Also, the way that most are processed/manufactured to standardized levels means that they no longer have all of the co-factors that allow them to be utilized by our bodies. Plus I like to add just the amount I need to satisfy my body/taste/intuition. That's why I prefer to add a few super foods to my daily healthy eating routine. I also use Garden of Life's Raw Meal 2-3 times a week. That would also be considered a functional food since its made from sprouts and dehydrated whole fruits and veggies.

Taking too many supplements is a bit hard on the liver since it has to process all of them. So I'm very judicious about how many I take.

I think it is a good post idea! I'll go to work on it . . .

  4. Great! I can't wait to read it! One supplement that I am taking now is L-glutamine. It has helped greatly with the urgency and frequency of my IBS-D like nothing else. I took an Rx when we went to Florida and it helped a little but I was still uncomfortable staying at someone's house and having to run to the restroom. And I didn't like taking such a strong med. As to the L-glutatmine, I read that you should be careful taking it if you have liver or kidney problems so I do worry a bit. But I am continuing to refine my diet and hopefully the healing will take place so that I don't need to depend on this supplement. I think that may be some of what you are saying about judicious use. Use carefully when needed and don't think just because you "need" it now you will continue to. I enjoy reading your thinking on these kinds of things because I know you have carefully thought about it. Thanks Dr. P!
