Do you have a food obsession?
I'm not talking about junk food, sugary treats or fried foods . . . I'm talking about a healthy food that your body craves. A taste, a texture, a mouth feel that instantly satisfies you right down to your soul.
As a doc I can say that healthy food cravings are simply signals from your cells to your brain that let you know you need a particular vitamin, mineral, enzyme combo that food contains in abundance.
For instance chocolate is a familiar craving for many of us. What you may not know is that chocolate is a very rich source of natural mood stabilizers in the form of muscle relaxing magnesium and mood elevating serotonin. So when you feel stressed and crave chocolate, that's the reason!
If you've been reading my blog for long, you may have guessed 2 of mine . . . the almighty King of the Greens - Kale, and the Star of all Root Veggies - Sweet Potatoes! But I also have another . . . coconut! I love it in all its forms . . . fresh, young coconut water and the soft, pudding-like meat; plus thick, rich and smooth Thai Kitchen's organic coconut milk; super fragrant, smooth and delicious coconut oil; So Delicious coconut milk in a carton; thick and very "coconutty" coconut butter; coconut shreds; and last but certainly not least - tangy, probiotic rich coconut kefir!
This morning I wanted to make a delicious smoothie for breakfast, but I was feeling a little bored with my recent berry varieties. Then all of the sudden I got inspired! I had (because I always have) a baked sweet potato in the fridge, I had both coconut water and coconut milk and I had a frozen banana in the freezer. Keep in mind that after more than 40 years of professional and home cooking, I can generally "imagine" what something will taste like before I even combine the ingredients. But today I just couldn't. I knew that it would be extremely nutritious, and I hoped it might be tasty, but I simply was not prepared for I just how delicious it actually was!
So I just had to share this super nutrient dense, super yummy smoothie . . .
